Agronomic characteristics of the spring forms of the wheat landraces (einkorn, emmer, spelt, intermediate bread wheat) grown in organic farming Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Capouchova, Ivana; Stehno, Zdenek; Moudry, Jan.
Organic farmers look to the possibilities of growing neglected crops, such as the spring forms of hulled wheat – einkorn, emmer and spelt – for support in developing the organic farming system. In 2008, 169 landraces from the gene bank at the Crop Research Institute in Prague were tested on certifi ed organic plots. The experiment was aimed at fi nding suitable varieties for the organic farming system. In summary, our fi ndings show that einkorn (Triticum monococcum L.) and emmer wheat [Triticum dicoccum Schrank (Schuebl)] are resistant to powdery mildew and brown rust, spelt wheat (Triticum spelta L.) is less resistant to these two diseases, and the intermediate forms of bread wheat are very sensitive to such infestation. The varieties evaluated incline...

Ancient Wheat Species Can Extend Biodiversity of Cultivated Crops Organic Eprints
Moudry, Jan; Konvalina, Petr; Stehno, Zdenek; Capouchova, Ivana; Moudry, Jan (Jr.).
Wheat genetic resources may be grown in organic farming systems or in less favourable areas for bread wheat species. Characteristics of hulled wheat species (23 varieties of einkorn, emmer wheat, spelt wheat) were studied and evaluated within a two-year trial period (which was executed on certified organic fields) and they were compared to characteristics of landraces and modern bread wheat varieties. The main aim of our study was to evaluate the potential uses of genetic resources of wheat in organic farming. The hulled wheat species were resistant to mildew and brown rust. Their grains were less contaminated with DON than the grains of the control varieties. The grain yield rate was reduced. Per hectare crude protein yield was higher in spelt and emmer...

Baking Quality of Winter Wheat Varieties in Organic Farming Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Moudry, Jan (Jr.); Capouchova, Ivana; Moudry, Jan.
The technological value of wheat is negatively influenced by organic methods of cultivation. The critical factor is the crude protein content and quality. The aim of this paper is to identify diferences in the quality of eight varieties and two strains of wheat recommended in conventional or organic conditions. Correlation analysis of the qualitative parameters of wheat shows a clear relationship between crude protein content, wet gluten content and Zeleny - sedimentation value. According to the test results, it is appropriate to use the content and quality of protein as selective criteria for the selection of varieties. The Level of baking quality is never reduced below the quality level of the worstquality varieties grown in the same conditions. On the...

Bioproduction in the Czech Republic Organic Eprints
Moudry, Jan (Jr.); Konvalina, Petr; Kolarova, Pavlina.
Organic farming in the Czech Republic is particularly located in Less Favoured Areas (LFA), which are often overlaid with environmentally sensitive areas. Acreage of organic farming in the Czech republic makes about 6% of the whole agriculture land. At present acreage of organic farming is 281 535 ha. More than 90% share of this acreage represent grasslands. Grasslands are linked with non-milk cattle breeding. Organic farming fulfils its environmental function good in contrast to its production function which is fulfilled much less. As the main product of organic farming in Czech Republic is produced bee, but most of this beef isn’t certified as a bio-product. The amount of bio-products is not sufficient enough and does not cover both market and export...

Composition of essential amino acids in emmer wheat landraces, old and modern varieties of bread wheat Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Capouchova, Ivana; Stehno, Zdenek; Moudry, Jan (Jr.); Moudry, Jan (Jr.).
Tetraploid emmer wheat [(Triticum dicoccum (Schrank) Schuebl] has become a more attractive crop for growing in marginal areas and for the organic farming system. As it provides a lower yield rate and has a specific quality, it is an exclusive food crop. Therefore, the proportion and nutritive quality of particular essential amino acids (threonine, valine, isoleucine, leucine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, lysine, methionine) and the total protein content were studied and evaluated in three-year trials carried out in two different localities. Furthermore, old and modern bread wheat varieties were compared. Results of our research confirmed a high crude protein content in grains of all the landraces of the emmer wheat. The emmer wheat variety contained 5% more...

Current conditions for seed use in the Czech organic farming Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Capouchova, Ivana; Stehno, Zdenek; Huda, P.; Blaha, Ladislav; Moudry, Jan (Jr.); Moudry, Jan.
Council Regulation (EC) No. 834/2007 of 28 June 2007 on organic production and labelling of organic products, and Commission Regulation (EC) No. 889/2008 of 5 September 2008 laying down detailed rules for the implementation of Council Regulation, are the most important European legislative instructions on organic farming. They lay down a permit to use just organic seeds for establishment of organic crop stands. Such seeds have to originate from the plants being grown in compliance with organic farming rules for at least one generation. Organic farmers are obliged, in compliance with the above-mentioned legislation, to use seeds originating from organic production when establishing crop stands. Otherwise, they are allowed to use their own seeds or they may...

Current situations in organic cereal seed offer in the Czech Republic Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Stehno, Zdenek; Capouchova, Ivana; Huda, Petr; Moudry, Jan; Moudry, Jan (Jr.).
Organic farmers are obliged, in compliance with the valid legislation, to use seed originating from the organic production when establishing the crop stands. In a survey we found certified organic cereal seed is used on 6 %, conventional untreated seed on 37 %, and farm seed on 57 % (of the organically farmed area in the Czech Republic). The main reasons for that are as follows: the insufficient surface of land intended for the reproduction of organic seed, the low proportion of accepted seed coming from the accepted reproduction surface. Therefore, low-quality farm seed is used on a large proportion of organically farmed land, which has a negative effect on the yield level of the cereals. These observations were also confirmed by results obtained in a...

Differences between organic and conventional farming systems in Czech Republic Organic Eprints
Moudry, Jan (Jr.); Konvalina, Petr.
Agriculture of the Czech Republic has features of submonate and montane agriculture. More than half of the surface of the Czech Republic are less favourable areas (LFA). Active state support of farming focused on the extensive production and maintenance of the countryside and the other environmental services is the crucial point of a successful development of competitive and economical (from the point of view of the environment) production in LFA. Organic farming is carried out on the area of 6 % of the surface of agricultural land, most of agricultural land is worked with conventional methods of farming. In the Czech Republic there are significant differences between structure of the organic and conventional farming, especially in the share of arable land...

Differences in grain/straw ratio, protein content and yield in landraces and modern varieties of different wheat species under organic farming. Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Stehno, Zdenek; Capouchova, Ivana; Zechner, Elisabeth; Berger, Sandra; Grausgruber, Heinrich; Janovska, Dagmar; Moudry , Jan.
Hulled wheat species (einkorn, emmer, spelt) are presumed to be an alternative to bread wheat in organic agriculture since the yield penalty is less pronounced under organic farming and generally higher prices can be achieved for specialty grains. The present study analyzed differences between wheat species with respect to biomass production, harvest index, grain yield and protein content. Spring hulled wheat genetic resources and bread wheat check cultivars were grown in organic field trials in the Czech Republic and Austria between 2010 and 2012. Generally, hulled wheat species were inferior in grain yield and distribution of assimilates to the grain compared to modern bread wheat. Biomass production of some emmer and spelt landraces was similar to bread...

Differences in the Morphological Characteristics of the Land Races of the Soft and Emmer Wheat in Relation to the Modern Varieties Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Stehno, Zdenek; Capouchova, Ivana; Moudry, Jan; Sramek, J.; Moudry, Jan (Jr.).
For the organic farmers there is important question which varieties of wheat are right for organic farming in Less Favoured Areas. Modern varieties of wheat are bred in the conditions of conventional (high imput) farming. That is why the organic farmers asked about the suitability of land races of soft wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) or different species like emmer wheat grown in the past (Triticum dicoccum SCHUEBL). The paper results from the study of fourty land races, two intermediate and ten modern varieties of soft wheat in comparison to ten land races of emmer wheat at two locations in the Czech Republic. We evaluated tuft shape, length of plant, length and width of flag leaf, length and density of spike and awnedness. The modern varieties of soft...

Differences in Yield Parameters of Emmer in Comparison with Old and New Varieties of Bread Wheat Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Capouchova, Ivana; Stehno, Zdenek; Moudry, Jan.
Emmer wheat (Triticum diccocum Schrank) belonged to the most frequent species of cereals in the past. Nowadays, it is grown in arid and montane areas in particular. Interest in this cereal species has increased, as it is tolerant to biotic and abiotic stressing factors. Therefore, yield parameters were evaluated in three-year (2007, 2008 and 2010) trials that were carried out in two different localities in the Czech Republic. Results of the research were compared to characteristics of four old and two top modern bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars. The emmer wheat varieties were resistant to usual wheat diseases. They formed their yield by a quantity of productive tillers (2.5), whereas the varieties of bread wheat had less productive tillers...

Distribution and use of grasslands in the Czech Republic and biodiversity of invertebrates Organic Eprints
Moudry, Jan (Jr.); Bohac, Jaroslav; Konvalina, Petr; Moudry, Jan; Kolarova, Pavlina.
In the Czech Republic the major focus of organic farming lies in permanent grasslands management. Animal production is mostly focused on non-milk pasture beef-raising on almost the whole farm area. By contrast conventional farms do not grass sufficiently, even in areas with higher elevation. This fact is influenced by subvention programmes motivating farmers to fulfil the agroenvironmental function of agriculture using grassing, however there is no support for agriculture on arable land. Permanent grasslands are predominantly used for beef grazing. Large areas are harvested too, which affects biodiverzity. Grasslands utilized for pasture are rich in biodiversity which enhance ecosystem services. The effect of grassland management on the different taxa and...

Diversity of carbon isotope discrimination in genetic resources of wheat Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Moudry, Jan; Suchý, Karel; Capouchova, Ivana; Janovska, Dagmar.
Strong drought tolerance is an important objective in breeding new wheat varieties. We compared the drought tolerance of land races and modern varieties of various spring wheat forms. 13C discrimination (CID) indicated how significantly the tested wheat varieties were inclined to drought tolerance. CID is a trait related to stomatal closure and consequently an important component of the tolerance to drought. Samples were grown in České Budĕjovice (CZ), from 2009 to 2012. Twenty-three varieties, comprising einkorn, emmer, spelt, land races and control variety of bread wheat were grown and tested. Results have shown some varieties achieved low CID values (which meant they were more inclined to the drought tolerance). There were emmer and spelt varieties...

Drought Tolerance of Land Races of Emmer Wheat in Comparison to Soft Wheat Organic Eprints
Konvalina, Petr; Moudry, Jan; Dotlacil, Ladislav; Stehno, Zdenek; Moudry, Jan (Jr.).
As water deficiency becomes a more frequent cause of the reduction in wheat yield levels, the search for donors of drought tolerance to be bred into adapted land races becomes urgent. Drought tolerance has been evaluated by the 13C discrimination method in six land races of emmer wheat (Triticum dicoccum SCHRANK), compared with land races, obsolete cultivars and modern varieties of soft wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The results of a two-year trial show that most of the genetic resources of emmer wheat, and intermediate land races of wheat are predisposed to drought tolerance. These varieties respond to dry conditions more sensitively, as they close their pores earlier (a lower value of the discrimination of 13C isotope). As for other land races and the top...
